UltraTech Cement Sponsors Rajasthan Royals

UltraTech Cement Limited, the single largest cement brand in the country, on Wednesday announced its association with the defending champions of Indian Premier League 2008, Rajasthan Royals. Through this association UltraTech will be the Official Team Sponsor of the Jaipur based IPL team.

Commenting on the association, Ranjit Barthakur, Vice Chairman, Rajasthan Royals said, "UltraTech Cement is driven by an extensive team of professionals who are inspired by sound leadership and strategic thinking which also drives our team. We are happy to be working with them in Season 2."

Further commenting on this partnership, O. P. Puranmalka, Business Head (Marketing & Strategy), UltraTech Cement, said, "The coming together of the two brands, UltraTech Cement and Rajasthan Royals, is the bringing together of two champions. Both are champions in their respective domains. Both are leaders and victorious, and are a perfect match. UltraTech has had a long association with Indian Cricket and we are extremely proud to be associated with the Champions of the last IPL season - Rajasthan Royals."
.
Inspired leadership, innovation, professionalism and a well thought out strategic approach lead the team to win India's first IPL. By defining roles specifically and delegating responsibility, the Rajasthan Royals came together as a cohesive winning unit, eventually emerging as champions. This ethos perfectly blends with UltraTech Cement who are known to be leaders and champions in its own sphere.

The event also witnessed Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty -co-owners Rajasthan Royals bid farewell to the Indian players of the team. Shilpa's encouraging words and support charged up the ambience and definitely the players.

She further added, "Rajasthan Royals is a heady mix of youth, experience and emerging talent and the same even holds true for UltraTech. Through this association we will be cementing our relationship, a definite "best choice" for us!"

Rajasthan Royals is the Jaipur franchise cricket team that represents the state of Rajasthan in the Indian Premier League. The Rajasthan Royals team embodies the spirit of the Rajasthani people - of valour, courage and honour both on and off the field. The Rajasthan Royals have become a very well known brand across the cricketing world, after their historic win in the inaugural IPL in 2008.

With their home base in Jaipur, India's well known 'Pink City', they have built a strong support base in the UK (where the ownership is based), Australia (where their captain and coach - Shane Warne is from), and now wish to leverage their strong South African connections to attract fans here during this season's IPL. The connections are significant through players Graeme Smith, Morne Morkel and Tyron Henderson, and through management, with Jeremy Snape (South Africa Performance Coach) a key member of the coaching team. Shilpa Shetty, the world famous Bollywood star, and partner Raj Kundra recently bought a 12% stake in the franchise, and are helping the team develop its off field merchandising plans, working closely with their partners.

There's no doubt that Shilpa Shetty's presence has added a toush of glamour to the team of Rajasthan Royals, but the actress certainly needs to brush up her knowledge about cricket.

McGrath will miss playing in India

The metronome is back, this time wearing his sincerity like a badge of honour. In the wake of his wife Jane’s death last June, Aussie pace legend Glenn McGrath had expressed apprehensions about resuming his Indian Premier League (IPL) stint even before the security issue blew up in his face. He spent the last few weeks being a fence-sitter, expressing an occasional doubt about the arrangements.

On Monday, though, he was criss-crossing the city to honour commercial commitments for the Delhi Daredevils, two day before he flies out to Johannesburg as part of a 24-member contingent. He even indulged in an ad shoot, with bare minimum security personnel for company, in a backroom at the Ferozeshah Kotla. He arrived with rookie T20 sensation David Warner, another Aussie who pooh-poohed security concerns.

McGrath, though, is not one to shy away from the plain-speak. Why is he here at all? Wouldn’t it have been easier to join the camp in South Africa, given the strident objections of Federations of International Cricketers Association (FICA) chief Tim May on Aussie cricketers visiting the subcontinent?

‘‘Look, mate, I didn’t have a choice,’’ McGrath told TOI without batting an eyelid, ‘‘As professionals we are expected to fulfill certain commitments. It’s unfortunate the way things have panned out in the subcontinent, with the Pakistani cricketers suffering the most.
.
‘‘I had doubts. Sitting in Australia it’s difficult to gauge the exact situation here. It’s certainly changed from the last time I was here. But it’s difficult to say no to IPL commitments. There’s the money and then there’s the chance to get back to some action. I’ll miss playing in India, I’m so popular here.’’

Warner, though, is younger, less circumspect. "The security situation is the same everywhere. No one can provide foolproof security," he said. "I can play wherever I’m asked to."

At a send-off ceremony in the evening, McGrath disclosed how Jane’s death and the prospect of leaving his children behind weighed heavier on his mind than the security. ‘‘My two kids are with the grandfather, but they don’t like it one bit,’’ he said, ‘‘Eight weeks away is a long time. It’s been a very difficult time for me.’’

All factors aside, the keen competitor in McGrath is itching to get back to action: ‘‘The pitches in SA will suit my style. I’ve been doing some gym work but I need to bowl more. T20 is a short game but it requires more focus, more intensity. The training you do before a game is the same, whatever the format. If I had to bowl any more than four overs a game, I’d have to rethink."

Rajasthan Royals tie up with TCS

Last year's IPL champions Rajasthan Royals have tied-up with Tata Consultancy Services as their technology partners for a period of three years.

TCS's Global Marketing Head, Jayant Pendharkar, told a media conference on Tuesday that Rajasthan Royals' champions status as well as the importance they give to technology were some of the reasons they were preferred from among the eight IPL teams in fray for season two of the IPL commencing on April 18.

"Over the years TCS have partnered sports events. We are connected with the Ferrari team, NBA and the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon," he said.

"One of the reasons for choosing Rajasthan Royals is their champion status and we like to deal with champions. The second reason is the importance they give to technology," Pendharkar said.
.
"TCS will help Rajasthan Royals with analysis of player performance, simulation and other things," he said, adding that TCS logo would be embossed on the caps and helmets of the Jaipur IPL franchise owned by Emerging Media.

Rajasthan Royals Vice Chairman Ranjit Barthakur revealed that this year the IPL first edition champions have roped in a total of nine sponsors which was more than in 2008.

Both Pendharkar and Barthakur refused to divulge the financial details of the three-year deal between TCS and Rajasthan Royals.

Shah Rukh slams Gavaskar

Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan took a dig at former India captain Sunil Gavaskar for ridiculing John Buchanan's multiple-captain theory saying he bought the team and would run it the way he wants.

Former Australia World Cup winning coach Buchanan, who is now manager of Kolkata Knight Riders, had suggested the four captain theory for the second season of the Indian Premier League that has ruffled a few feathers, including that of former India skipper Sourav Ganguly.

"I have great respect for Mr Gavaskar. I have grown up enjoying his performance as well as KR Vishwanath and Kapil's. We all respect him too much but having said that I would like to say that please give it (the multiple-captain theory) a breathing space to try now. If we fail we can always go back to the traditional way," Shah Rukh said at a media conference in Mumbai on Sunday to announce new initiatives with Team sponsors Nokia.
.
The Bollywood star said he has spent a lot of money in buying the team and would like to run it as he deems fit.

"I have spent lot of money on my team. If you have a problem then you buy your own team and run it the way you want," he said, in an obvious response to Gavaskar's comments.

India's batting legend Gavaskar, in a newspaper column, had criticised Buchanan's theory saying too much importance is being accorded to the Australian, who is a failed first-class cricketer and is only trying to get lucrative jobs for "his Queensland pals".

"To comment on his multiple skipper theory is to give it the importance it doesn't deserve but what does require comment is how he has got his Queensland pals lucrative jobs with KKR.

"They have a very big support staff which includes his son and most of them are from Queensland. The owners - poor souls - have little idea that they are being milked," Gavaskar had written.

Shah Rukh, meanwhile, said he would rather try the multiple captain idea and fail than not giving it a chance at all.

"Twenty20 cricket is a new format and last time we did not do well after going by the traditional way (one captain). This time Buchanan will try multiple captaincy in the practice game before the IPL starts in South Africa and see whether he succeeds or not," the Bollywood star said.

Buchanan's concept has generated lot of controversy ahead of the April 18 to May 24 IPL to be held in eight cities of South Africa.

Sourav Ganguly, who led the team last year, had expressed resentment to the multiple captain idea.

The former India captain and Buchanan have had lengthy discussions with Shah Rukh at his residence to thrash out the issues.

Shah Rukh on Sunday pointed out that the concept had been tried out last year itself by Kings XI Punjab.

"It was tried out last year itself by the Mohali team which had a fielding captain (Kumar Sangakkara), a batting captain, a bowling captain and an overall captain Yuvraj Singh," he said.

The Bollywood star gave the example of cricket's cousin baseball which has coaches giving instructions from outside the field to the pitchers, batters and others.

Shah Rukh also expressed hope that his team would perform much better than last year.

"All our players like Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Sourav Ganguly, Brad Hodge, Ajantha Mendis, Ishant Sharma, Mashrafe Mortaza are available," he said.

"Almost 97 to 98 per cent of the players are available and it's a strong line-up. I hope the team performs better than last year," Shah Rukh said.

Mumbai Indians youngsters impress Jonty Rhodes

South African fielding legend Jonty Rhodes was impressed with the work ethic shown by youngsters of the Indian Premier League franchisee Mumbai Indians during a training camp in Durban last week.

Rhodes, a member of the Mumbai Indians team management, was assisted by fellow South African Shaun Pollock, who has been roped in as consultant by the Sachin Tendulkar-led side.

"The majority of the players we worked with will fit around the four overseas professionals and four Indian internationals so they are quite young and their skills are very Indian specific," Rhodes said.

"But they showed great enthusiasm and were very keen to throw themselves about. They watch a lot of international cricket and do not subscribe to old theory that India does not have a fielding culture. I was very impressed by how much they wanted to learn and absorb," Rhodes was quoted as saying in 'Cape Times'.
.
With the IPL having been shifted to South Africa, there's strong belief that franchisees with Proteas stars will have the edge in this year's tournament, a notion Rhodes rubbishes.

"International players adjust very quickly today. Most of the guys in all the teams are experienced international cricketers. They play all over the world and have learnt to adapt very quickly," the 39-year-old Rhodes said.

"Take a guy like Dwayne Bravo. He plays for the West Indies in the Caribbean, where each island has different conditions, and he has learnt a lot on how to adapt all over. His experience will be very valuable," said Rhodes, who shot to fame with his dazzling field works.

The Mumbai Indians will open their campaign against last year's finalists Chennai Super Kings, on April 18, at Newlands.

Rhodes also had some words of praise for Pollock. "Shaun is going to be invaluable to the team. There's no doubt about that. He just has such a calm demeanour in the dressing room.

"Even when it was thought that the tournament was going to be held in India, and Shaun was still considering whether to come back for another year, the Mumbai management made it very clear they wanted him back," Rhodes said.

Ponting concerned of IPL carnival in SA

As the Indian Premier League carnival prepares to hit the South African shores, Australian skipper Ricky Ponting has warned his players against letting the cash-rich tournament cloud their minds during the ODI series against the Proteas.

Australia and South Africa play a five-match ODI series starting on Saturday till April 17 and the IPL starts April 18.

Ponting said any player who gets distracted by the IPL would not be able to do well.

"I'd like to think that the guys have solely got their minds on what they need to have their minds on for the next couple of weeks," said the skipper.

"The IPL will start up once our tournament is over. Whenever you are representing Australia, if you have a clouded mind on anything at all then you are not going to play your best cricket. I haven't heard that around the group, any talk about the IPL whatsoever.
.
"We know that we've got a lot of guys coming out from Australia who will be arriving in South Africa very soon to start their preparations for the IPL. The moment I hear any of that stuff creeping in, it will be addressed," he added.

Defending champions Rajasthan Royals will be the first to land here and based in Cape Town from next week.

Ponting made it clear that he would not tolerate any IPL talk in the dressing room during the series.

"We are the number two-ranked One-day team in the world and we'd love to see ourselves back in the number one ranking by the end of this series. They will be the motivating factors for us, nothing to do with the IPL," Ponting told reporters.

"All the money and contracts have been sorted anyway. Now it's just a matter of representing your country the best way that you possibly can. That's what we'll certainly be trying to achieve over the next couple of weeks," he added.

Ponting has kept himself out of IPL, opting to spend time with his wife and daughter during the two-week break he will get after the current ODI series.

Meanwhile, rival skipper Graeme Smith admitted that IPL coming to South Africa has made some impact on players but insisted they remain focussed on their ODI series against the world champions.

"With the fact that it has come here to South Africa, it has impacted a lot more on the players at home. They have had probably a lot more involvement in terms of information for the respective teams," he said.

"I know Rajasthan join in Cape Town in Monday. I have had an involvement in that. Ultimately South Africa comes first. After that we can take care of the IPL. I'm sure there will be a lot of interaction here and there, saying hello and catching up with the guys," he added.

Chat with Punjab Kings X I during IPL 2

Fans of Team Mohali will be able to interact with their favourite cricketers during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) next month. The team management has decided to allow the players of Team Mohali to chat online with their fans. It is probably the only team that has decided to allow the players' interaction with the fans online.

The players will be able to login on the team's website and chat with the fans an hour after the match is over.

"It is an innovative and exciting idea and I am looking forward to chat with my fans online. I have never interacted with cricket fans online and this is a great opportunity for me," said Irfan Pathan, who plays for Team Mohali.

"Such interactions will help us know the views and ideas of our fans. Many cricket followers want to ask lot of questions to the players and such chatting will help us connect with them," Irfan added.
.
The chatting facility is also expected to help cricketers, who will be playing in South Africa, connect with their fans back home. The Team Mohali players will also be allowed to post blogs on the team website wherein they will express their views on several aspects of cricket.

KKR will Announce Captain and Squad in S.A.

Apparently fearing a public outrage after Sourav Ganguly was stripped of sole captaincy role, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Monday said they will announce their skipper and squad for the Indian Premier League second season in South Africa and not in India.

After the six-day training camp concluded on Monday, KKR Director of Cricket Operations John Buchanan while leaving the Eden Gardens merely said a 24-member squad will fly to South Africa on Tuesday.
.
KKR Chief Executive Officer Joy Bhattacharjee, when contacted and asked to name the 24 players, said, "I don't want to disclose who will go to South Africa now. The final squad will be named in South Africa."

IPL giving GooseBumps to South Africans Already

The second edition of IPL, to be held in South Africa next month, has already generated great excitement, enthusiasm and expectation among the people of the country.

Television, radio stations and the print media in the country are full of news about the extravagant event that is scheduled to begin from April 18 with first match in Cape Town and to continue thereafter until May 24.

This became clear during a radio talk show hosted by the Newsbreak Current Affairs programme on the national SABC Lotus FM radio at the weekend. The listeners jammed the show with calls, expressing their excitement and joy that they would be able to watch the world's best players and also some of the Bollywood stars.

However, a sports columnist Archie Henderson had questioned in his column "No boundaries" on the The Times daily newspaper that whether the "event will benefit South Africa as a nation?"

"It will be a stunning carnival of cricket, with dancing girls and Bollywood glamour, but will it benefit South Africa as a nation?," Henderson wrote. He claimed that Lalit Modi, the IPL CEO, pulled a "fast one" on SA by first negotiating with the English Cricket League.

But, whatever be the case, the general populace, especially people of Indian origin, are "over the moon" that the IPL is to be staged here.

Jacob Oram to miss IPL 2

New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram says he will pull out of the Indian Premier League if a nagging Achilles tendon strain prevents him from playing the domestic state championship final on April 6.

Oram, who represents Chennai Super Kings in the cash-rich league, denied suggestions that he was trying to save himself for the Twenty20 event by not playing in the ongoing Test series against India which the Kiwis trail 0-1.

"I can understand people thinking I'm cotton-wooling myself but I'll definitely take myself out (of the IPL) if I don't get through the final," Oram told The Dominion Post.

Apart from the India series, the injury has forced him to withdraw from the Central Districts' domestic four-day match against Auckland.
.
But the imposing all-rounder said he was hopeful of being fit for the State Championship final against the same side at Lincoln, outside Christchurch.

Oram has a $675,000 contract with the Chennai Super Kings, who will open the second edition of the IPL against the Mumbai Indians in Cape Town on April 18.

CSK gets Durban as base

Most of the IPL teams were craving for Durban as their base for the second season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Last year's runners-up Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have gone on to clinch it, and their five-day camp before the IPL will take place in the city, which boasts of a huge Indian population.

The CSK bosses, who are currently in South Africa, held talks with Cricket South Africa (CSA) and IPL authorities to ensure that they get Durban as their base.

According to CSK sources, "it was the best thing that could have happened to the team" before the tournament.

It was learnt that the CSK team will have their camp in Durban from April 8 with 23 players. There, the team may play a couple of practice games, and CSA has promised to extend full support.
.
On April 16, the team will move to Cape Town for a carnival that is being organised by the IPL organising committee.

All the teams will be present in the carnival to promote IPL just before it takes off. "We believe it'll be a big success. In fact, the kind of response that we're getting from the people here, is absolutely overwhelming...Don't be surprised if many of the matches go full-house," an IPL source told the TOI.

After the carnival, all the teams will move to the venues of their first games. CSK play their first game against Mumbai Indians in Cape Town.

IPL shifting will globalise cricket: Irfan Pathan

India paceman Irfan Pathan is definitely disappointed at not being able to play the second season of the Indian Premier League in front of home crowd, but feels shifting the cash-rich Twenty20 tournament to South Africa will globalise the game.

"I am certainly disappointed as shifting of IPL to South Africa will deny us an opportunity to perform before Indian audience, specially the Mohali crowd. It's nice because the supporters kick up spirit of the team everytime.

"But under the given circumstances, people of the country will be able to watch it on television at least. Its better than not having the event at all," said Irfan, who plays for the Kings XI Punjab in IPL.
.
"But I think there are IPL fans throughout the world and this decision (to shift the IPL), in one way will help to globalise the cricket. Some section of people, who missed the inaugural edition, will probably watch the tournament this year," he added.

The BCCI were forced to to shift this year's IPL out of the country due to security reasons as it clashes with the general elections.

Raj. Royals to take on Nashua Cape Cobras ahead of IPL 2

Reigning Indian Premier League champions Rajasthan Royals will take on South African T20 winners Nashua Cape Cobras in two matches ahead of IPL's second edition that kicks off in Cape Town on April 18.

The best-of-two encounter termed "Clash of Champions" and pitting the Twenty20 champions of India and South Africa, who are hosting the second edition of the cash-rich tournament, will be held on April 11 and 12, according to a media release.

Rajasthan Royals will make Cape Town their base during IPL season II, set to conclude on May 24, following a strategic partnership with the Nashua Cape Cobras and Western Province Cricket association, owners of Sahara Park Newlands, Cape Town.

Both teams have also agreed to work together on future cricketing and sponsorship opportunities to further sporting links between India and South Africa.

In addition to the two matches, the partnership will also see the two teams embarking on players exchange to develop young talent and collaboration of the management teams to share best practices.
.
South Africa's national team skipper and Rajasthan Royals team member Graeme Smith, felt that the clash between the domestic T20 champions of India and SA was a great curtain-raiser for IPL 2.

"I can't wait to see the Royals in action at Sahara Park Newlands. It is great that the IPL is coming to South Africa, and the Clash of the Champions between the IPL Champions and the South African Standard Bank Pro 20 Champions is a great curtain raiser for the IPL 2009 season and an event not to be missed," Smith said.

Manoj Badale, Chairman and co-owner of Rajasthan Royals, expressed his happiness at the partnership.

"We are delighted to be working with the Nashua Cape Cobras at Sahara Park Newlands during our IPL tournament preparation. Its a great venue, and the Clash of the Champions over the Easter weekend will be an exciting contest.

"It is the first time the Royals have played since winning the IPL Tournament and it will be great to see the team back in action.

Andre Odendaal, CEO of Cape Cobras, commented, "We have been talking with the Royals extensively since their exciting victory in the inaugural IPL. We are thrilled to be hosting the Royals at home and the start of what we hope will be a long standing partnership

Mumbai Indians eyes City Double

After guiding Mumbai to their 38th Ranji Trophy crown as coach, Praveen Amre has set his sights on another coveted title - the Indian Premier League - to be played in South Africa from April 18 to May 24.

Amre, who has joined as coach of Mumbai Indians franchise outfit and aims to act as the bridge between the youngsters and team mentor Shaun Pollock, said the rapport he has built up over the last three years with Mumbai players and West Zone cricketers would be very useful.

"The difference between my stint for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy and for Mumbai Indians is that I would be more accountable," Amre told reporters on Wednesday at the Brabourne Stadium.

"The rapport I have built over the last three years coaching Mumbai in Ranji Trophy will be helpful. I also know most of the players in the team. That will be an added advantage", said Amre who made a Test century on debut at Kingsmead in Durban during India's maiden visit in 1992.
.
Amre pointed out the importance of domestic cricketers in the success or otherwise of each of the eight franchise teams.

"Each team will have seven domestic players in the playing eleven and for any team to do well the performance of these cricketers is vital," he noted.

Amre also felt that his stint in South African domestic cricket in 1999, when he played for Boland, would help him during the Twenty20 mega event.

"I had played in all the venues where the IPL matches have been scheduled when I represented Boland for six weeks in 1999. I'm going there now in a different role," the former middle order batsman said.

"I would like to go there and see the conditions before giving my inputs as it's the fag end of the domestic season in South Africa and the wickets may not be as fast at this time," said Amre.

The former Test cricketer was gung-ho over the three-week stint of 10 youngsters in his team in SA which would go up to five with the team scheduled to leave on April 5.

"They had a stay of three weeks and we would now be going two weeks in advance. That experience would be very important. We would also be playing a couple of matches in Durban when we reach there on April 5. These are being arranged by Shaun and Jonty Rhodes (the fielding coach)", he said.

Ten MI players have come back after a 22-day training stint in SA under the watchful eyes of Pollock and Rhodes.

Amre felt shifting IPL's second edition to South Africa would be beneficial for youngsters in all the eight franchise teams.

"As the junior selection panel chairman I had always advocated that the youngsters need to visit Australia and South Africa. This is a good chance for them to do well and impress the selectors before the Twenty20 World Cup (In June in England)," he said.

Amre felt the IPL can expect good crowd support in South Africa, especially in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg.

"I can guarantee good crowd support in Durban, in Cape Town - which has a big Indian presence - and in Johannesburg," he said.

Praveen Amre Mumbai Indians new coach

Praveen Amre, who guided Mumbai to their 38th Ranji Trophy title earlier this season as coach, has been appointed as the coach of the Mumbai Indians franchise team for its IPL campaign in South Africa.

Former Test middle order batsman Amre has replaced ex-India opener Lalchand Rajput as Mumbai Indians coach and will be assisting the squad's chief mentor and bowling coach Shaun Pollock, a spokesperson for the franchise said on Tuesday.

"Amre has joined as coach replacing Rajput. He would be assisting Pollock who is the chief mentor of the team as well as its bowling coach while Jonty Rhodes is the third arm as the fielding coach," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson also informed that most of the team's members, barring the foreigners and captain Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh and Dhawal Kulkarni, who are set to return from New Zealand after the Test series ends, are to leave on April 7 for South Africa.
.
"Sachin and the other seniors are set to return on April 9 and are tentatively scheduled to leave on April 13, but the programme is not finalised. All the others, except the four and the foreigners, are to leave on April 7," the spokesperson added.

Delhi Daredevils captures Johannesburg

Delhi Daredevils will be based in Johannesburg for an eight-day camp ahead of IPL Season 2. It was a toss-up between Johannesburg and Pretoria but the franchisee prefers the former venue.

"In all probability we will be based on Johannesburg for a couple of days before the event kicks off," said an official. While two of the four Australians in the squad - Glenn McGrath and David Warner - are slated to arrive in Delhi on Friday, Andrew McDonald and Dirk Nannes will join the team in SA.
.
Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah too are expected to join the Daredevils camp in Johannesburg.

Pakistan players plan to sue IPL

Five leading Pakistani cricketers, who were dumped by the IPL, are planning to file a case in an Indian court against the IPL bosses and franchises for canceling their contracts prematurely and not clearing their dues for the term of their three-year contracts.

Pakistan captain Younis Khan, Shoaib Malik, Shahid Afridi, Salman Butt and Shoaib Akhtar, who all played in the inaugural IPL tournament, have asked an agent to go to Mumbai and file the damages suit there in the High Court.

"The agent represents Mohammad Asif and now he has also been approached by these players to help them file a case against the IPL in Indian court," a 'Jang' report said on Thursday.
.
The players feel the IPL wrongly terminated their three-year contracts after the Pakistan government did not allow these players to go to India because of the strained political relations between the two countries.

The IPL has now been shifted to South Africa for security reasons and the players want the IPL to either allow them to play in the IPL in South Africa or compensate them fully for their three year contracts or revive them.

"The players believe since they didn't refuse to play in the IPL the organisers should not terminated their contracts at a short notice without clearing dues for the full three-year contract," the report said.

Interestingly, the IPL and its franchises did not terminate the contracts of four other Pakistani players, Sohail Tanvir, Umar Gul, Misbah-ul-Haq and Kamran Akmal and has suspended their contracts.

Gul, infact, has now informed his team, Kolkata Knight Riders to increase his contractual fee as he was brought in the players auction last year for only $150,000.

Mohammad Hafeez another Pakistani player who represented the Kolkatta Knight Riders only had a one-year contract with them while Asif has been released by Delhi Daredevils after testing positive in a dope test carried out in the league last year by the organisers.

However, Asif has now got his dues from the IPL/Franchise and has no grievances.

Royal Challengers not a Test team anymore: Mallya

Induction of England batsman Kevin Pietersen and New Zealand's Jesse Ryder, besides the city-lad Robin Uthappa, has helped the IPL franchise Bangalore Royal Challengers shed its tag of a Test outfit in Twenty20 cricket, owner Vijay Mallya said on Thursday.

"Last year, our team was called a Test team but with players such as (Kevin) Pietersen, (Robin) Uthappa and (Jesse) Ryder in the squad now, no one calls it a Test team anymore," Mallya said.

Mallya's team was criticised by experts last year for lacking the firepower required for Twenty20 cricket as it ended up seventh in the eight-team contest.

Pietersen is to lead the team till he is available to do so after which star South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis would take over the mantle.
.
The liquor baron said that his team had five home-grown players and their familiarity with conditions in South Africa, where the second edition of IPL is to be held from April 18, will stand his team in good stead for the battles ahead.

"We have five South African players in our team, apart from former South Africa coach Ray Jennings. They are well aware of the conditions in that country and this advantage should work in our favour," he said.

The quintet of South African players - Dale Steyn, Jaques Kallis, Mark Boucher, Roelof Van der Merwe and Dillion du Preez are among the RCB's ten foreign recruits.

While admitting that the shifting of IPL to South Africa would cause some financial losses to the franchise, Mallya said he was confident that the cricket board would make up for those.

"The event is sure to cost us but I am sure that the BCCI will do something about it. Holding the tournament in such a short time was a challenge in itself, the 'hisaab-kitaab' can be done once the tournament is over," he said.

Mallya hoped that shifting the venue of IPL to South Africa will not hamper the viewership.

"About 95 per cent viewership of IPL is TV audience. It is unlikely to suffer as the BCCI has adjusted the timings of the matches as per the convenience of Indian audience.

"IPL going overseas is a lot better than missing it altogether," he said.

South Africa mein mehnga fatka Teams Face Finaicial Crisis in South Africa

Once the BCCI decided to shift the IPL to South Africa they promised to ease out a fair bit of the extra financial burden the franchises will be forced into. But it now appears that the owners may not get so lucky, and will have to find ways to handle substantially higher costs.

The Rainbow Nation awaits the sudden windfall that comes as a perfect populist offering - five weeks of high-voltage 'Cricketainment' that will also generate an estimated $100 million, just the stimulus South Africa's exchequer would love to have again and again. And obviously, the hosts are thrilled to bits.

"Our country has a wonderful opportunity to experience - there are already 100 of the best players in the world - but a taste of Indian culture and how fanatical the game is in India," South African skipper Graeme Smith says. "I think it makes for wonderful entertainment, not only with the cricket but the entertainment side of the IPL put into the game is terrific."

But it is the big-ticket franchises who could have a problem with the rising overheads, or the lack of economic opportunity in good measure.

— Franchises were aiming at a 20 per cent revenue growth just from ticketing sales. But without the city connect, gate receipts would be much less than what they had earned last year.

— Franchise owners get 12-14 hoardings in their home grounds that they give to their own sponsors. But now, in-stadia advertising prospects are bleak in South Africa, something their sponsors aren't happy about.

— With each team planning to ferry around 20-25 members across South Africa for the tournament, hotel and travel costs could increase quite a bit.

"Most people look at is the BCCI's IPL side and the franchisees on the other," says Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Joy Bhattacharya. "We're partners, and all of us have to get together to make the IPL in South Africa a success. So it is a question of partnership and I'm sure they know we are under financial constraints. We will find a way to make it work."

This year the BCCI will make an estimated Rs 400 crore from the new broadcast deal that will generate Rs 40 crore for each franchisee. Also, central sponsorship which is roughly 10 per cent of the TV earnings will fetch the teams another Rs 5 crore each. Add to it another Rs 5 crore the teams save since they don't have to pay entertainment and service tax in South Africa.

But with franchisee fees to the BCCI and player salaries estimated to be Rs 350-400 crore, how do the team owners make money? Clearly, it's not just the players who will sweat it out at each game.
