UltraTech Cement Sponsors Rajasthan Royals

UltraTech Cement Limited, the single largest cement brand in the country, on Wednesday announced its association with the defending champions of Indian Premier League 2008, Rajasthan Royals. Through this association UltraTech will be the Official Team Sponsor of the Jaipur based IPL team.

Commenting on the association, Ranjit Barthakur, Vice Chairman, Rajasthan Royals said, "UltraTech Cement is driven by an extensive team of professionals who are inspired by sound leadership and strategic thinking which also drives our team. We are happy to be working with them in Season 2."

Further commenting on this partnership, O. P. Puranmalka, Business Head (Marketing & Strategy), UltraTech Cement, said, "The coming together of the two brands, UltraTech Cement and Rajasthan Royals, is the bringing together of two champions. Both are champions in their respective domains. Both are leaders and victorious, and are a perfect match. UltraTech has had a long association with Indian Cricket and we are extremely proud to be associated with the Champions of the last IPL season - Rajasthan Royals."
.
Inspired leadership, innovation, professionalism and a well thought out strategic approach lead the team to win India's first IPL. By defining roles specifically and delegating responsibility, the Rajasthan Royals came together as a cohesive winning unit, eventually emerging as champions. This ethos perfectly blends with UltraTech Cement who are known to be leaders and champions in its own sphere.

The event also witnessed Raj Kundra and Shilpa Shetty -co-owners Rajasthan Royals bid farewell to the Indian players of the team. Shilpa's encouraging words and support charged up the ambience and definitely the players.

She further added, "Rajasthan Royals is a heady mix of youth, experience and emerging talent and the same even holds true for UltraTech. Through this association we will be cementing our relationship, a definite "best choice" for us!"

Rajasthan Royals is the Jaipur franchise cricket team that represents the state of Rajasthan in the Indian Premier League. The Rajasthan Royals team embodies the spirit of the Rajasthani people - of valour, courage and honour both on and off the field. The Rajasthan Royals have become a very well known brand across the cricketing world, after their historic win in the inaugural IPL in 2008.

With their home base in Jaipur, India's well known 'Pink City', they have built a strong support base in the UK (where the ownership is based), Australia (where their captain and coach - Shane Warne is from), and now wish to leverage their strong South African connections to attract fans here during this season's IPL. The connections are significant through players Graeme Smith, Morne Morkel and Tyron Henderson, and through management, with Jeremy Snape (South Africa Performance Coach) a key member of the coaching team. Shilpa Shetty, the world famous Bollywood star, and partner Raj Kundra recently bought a 12% stake in the franchise, and are helping the team develop its off field merchandising plans, working closely with their partners.

McGrath will miss playing in India

The metronome is back, this time wearing his sincerity like a badge of honour. In the wake of his wife Jane’s death last June, Aussie pace legend Glenn McGrath had expressed apprehensions about resuming his Indian Premier League (IPL) stint even before the security issue blew up in his face. He spent the last few weeks being a fence-sitter, expressing an occasional doubt about the arrangements.

On Monday, though, he was criss-crossing the city to honour commercial commitments for the Delhi Daredevils, two day before he flies out to Johannesburg as part of a 24-member contingent. He even indulged in an ad shoot, with bare minimum security personnel for company, in a backroom at the Ferozeshah Kotla. He arrived with rookie T20 sensation David Warner, another Aussie who pooh-poohed security concerns.

McGrath, though, is not one to shy away from the plain-speak. Why is he here at all? Wouldn’t it have been easier to join the camp in South Africa, given the strident objections of Federations of International Cricketers Association (FICA) chief Tim May on Aussie cricketers visiting the subcontinent?

‘‘Look, mate, I didn’t have a choice,’’ McGrath told TOI without batting an eyelid, ‘‘As professionals we are expected to fulfill certain commitments. It’s unfortunate the way things have panned out in the subcontinent, with the Pakistani cricketers suffering the most.
.
‘‘I had doubts. Sitting in Australia it’s difficult to gauge the exact situation here. It’s certainly changed from the last time I was here. But it’s difficult to say no to IPL commitments. There’s the money and then there’s the chance to get back to some action. I’ll miss playing in India, I’m so popular here.’’

Warner, though, is younger, less circumspect. "The security situation is the same everywhere. No one can provide foolproof security," he said. "I can play wherever I’m asked to."

At a send-off ceremony in the evening, McGrath disclosed how Jane’s death and the prospect of leaving his children behind weighed heavier on his mind than the security. ‘‘My two kids are with the grandfather, but they don’t like it one bit,’’ he said, ‘‘Eight weeks away is a long time. It’s been a very difficult time for me.’’

All factors aside, the keen competitor in McGrath is itching to get back to action: ‘‘The pitches in SA will suit my style. I’ve been doing some gym work but I need to bowl more. T20 is a short game but it requires more focus, more intensity. The training you do before a game is the same, whatever the format. If I had to bowl any more than four overs a game, I’d have to rethink."

Rajasthan Royals tie up with TCS

Last year's IPL champions Rajasthan Royals have tied-up with Tata Consultancy Services as their technology partners for a period of three years.

TCS's Global Marketing Head, Jayant Pendharkar, told a media conference on Tuesday that Rajasthan Royals' champions status as well as the importance they give to technology were some of the reasons they were preferred from among the eight IPL teams in fray for season two of the IPL commencing on April 18.

"Over the years TCS have partnered sports events. We are connected with the Ferrari team, NBA and the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon," he said.

"One of the reasons for choosing Rajasthan Royals is their champion status and we like to deal with champions. The second reason is the importance they give to technology," Pendharkar said.
.
"TCS will help Rajasthan Royals with analysis of player performance, simulation and other things," he said, adding that TCS logo would be embossed on the caps and helmets of the Jaipur IPL franchise owned by Emerging Media.

Rajasthan Royals Vice Chairman Ranjit Barthakur revealed that this year the IPL first edition champions have roped in a total of nine sponsors which was more than in 2008.

Both Pendharkar and Barthakur refused to divulge the financial details of the three-year deal between TCS and Rajasthan Royals.

Shah Rukh slams Gavaskar

Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan took a dig at former India captain Sunil Gavaskar for ridiculing John Buchanan's multiple-captain theory saying he bought the team and would run it the way he wants.

Former Australia World Cup winning coach Buchanan, who is now manager of Kolkata Knight Riders, had suggested the four captain theory for the second season of the Indian Premier League that has ruffled a few feathers, including that of former India skipper Sourav Ganguly.

"I have great respect for Mr Gavaskar. I have grown up enjoying his performance as well as KR Vishwanath and Kapil's. We all respect him too much but having said that I would like to say that please give it (the multiple-captain theory) a breathing space to try now. If we fail we can always go back to the traditional way," Shah Rukh said at a media conference in Mumbai on Sunday to announce new initiatives with Team sponsors Nokia.
.
The Bollywood star said he has spent a lot of money in buying the team and would like to run it as he deems fit.

"I have spent lot of money on my team. If you have a problem then you buy your own team and run it the way you want," he said, in an obvious response to Gavaskar's comments.

India's batting legend Gavaskar, in a newspaper column, had criticised Buchanan's theory saying too much importance is being accorded to the Australian, who is a failed first-class cricketer and is only trying to get lucrative jobs for "his Queensland pals".

"To comment on his multiple skipper theory is to give it the importance it doesn't deserve but what does require comment is how he has got his Queensland pals lucrative jobs with KKR.

"They have a very big support staff which includes his son and most of them are from Queensland. The owners - poor souls - have little idea that they are being milked," Gavaskar had written.

Shah Rukh, meanwhile, said he would rather try the multiple captain idea and fail than not giving it a chance at all.

"Twenty20 cricket is a new format and last time we did not do well after going by the traditional way (one captain). This time Buchanan will try multiple captaincy in the practice game before the IPL starts in South Africa and see whether he succeeds or not," the Bollywood star said.

Buchanan's concept has generated lot of controversy ahead of the April 18 to May 24 IPL to be held in eight cities of South Africa.

Sourav Ganguly, who led the team last year, had expressed resentment to the multiple captain idea.

The former India captain and Buchanan have had lengthy discussions with Shah Rukh at his residence to thrash out the issues.

Shah Rukh on Sunday pointed out that the concept had been tried out last year itself by Kings XI Punjab.

"It was tried out last year itself by the Mohali team which had a fielding captain (Kumar Sangakkara), a batting captain, a bowling captain and an overall captain Yuvraj Singh," he said.

The Bollywood star gave the example of cricket's cousin baseball which has coaches giving instructions from outside the field to the pitchers, batters and others.

Shah Rukh also expressed hope that his team would perform much better than last year.

"All our players like Chris Gayle, Brendon McCullum, Sourav Ganguly, Brad Hodge, Ajantha Mendis, Ishant Sharma, Mashrafe Mortaza are available," he said.

"Almost 97 to 98 per cent of the players are available and it's a strong line-up. I hope the team performs better than last year," Shah Rukh said.
